Walnut Market Size in Ukraine

The Ukrainian walnut market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, surging by 6.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Walnut Production in Ukraine

In value terms, walnut production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of walnuts in Ukraine reached X tons per ha, surging by 3.6% against the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the average walnut yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of walnuts production in Ukraine amounted to X ha, picking up by 1.9% compared with the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to walnut production attained the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Ukraine

In 2021, shipments abroad of walnuts decreased by -25.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 182%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, walnut exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 153% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Turkey (X tons) was the main destination for walnut exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 40% share of total exports. Moreover, walnut exports to Turkey exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Iraq (X tons), threefold. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Turkey totaled -8.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Iraq (-17.1% per year) and Azerbaijan (+1.2% per year).

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the key foreign market for walnut exports from Ukraine, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Azerbaijan ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Iraq, with a 9.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Turkey amounted to -9.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Azerbaijan (-2.6% per year) and Iraq (-22.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average walnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, the amount of walnuts imported into Ukraine surged to X tons, jumping by 43% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 578%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, walnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 751% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) was the main walnut supplier to Ukraine, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States (X tons), with a 3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey was relatively modest.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of walnut to Ukraine, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey stood at -3.3%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average walnut import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -17.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 35%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey stood at $X per ton.
