Wheelchair Market Size in Ukraine

For the third consecutive year, the Ukrainian wheelchair market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -9.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a mild reduction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wheelchair production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 53% against the previous year. Wheelchair production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Ukraine

Wheelchair exports from Ukraine reduced notably to X units in 2021, with a decrease of -20.1% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 147%. The exports peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wheelchair exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Russia (X units) was the main destination for wheelchair exports from Ukraine, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova (X units), with a 2.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia was relatively modest.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for wheelchairs exports from Ukraine, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia stood at -2.0%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wheelchair export price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 7.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Russia stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+3.7%).

Imports into Ukraine

In 2021, purchases abroad of wheelchairs decreased by -1.8% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheelchair imports fell significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a temperate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 143%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest wheelchair supplier to Ukraine, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, wheelchair imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X units), sevenfold. Turkey (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+20.7% per year) and Turkey (+24.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wheelchairs to Ukraine, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 7.1% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at -4.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+57.8% per year) and France (+65.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average wheelchair import price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -14.2% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wheelchair import price decreased by -18.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 47% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Turkey ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+20.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
