Mobile Phone Market Size in Ukraine

After six years of growth, the Ukrainian mobile phone market decreased by -15.3% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mobile phone exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 89% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X units), Moldova (X units) and Georgia (X units) were the main destinations of mobile phone exports from Ukraine, together accounting for 90% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +172.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for mobile phone exported from Ukraine were Moldova ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports.

Germany, with a CAGR of +164.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average mobile phone export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, mobile phone export price decreased by -6.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 38%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Georgia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ukraine

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of mobile phones decreased by -32.7% to X units in 2022. In general, imports recorded a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mobile phone imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of mobile phone to Ukraine, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, mobile phone imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X units), fivefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to -1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-6.0% per year) and India (-22.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mobile phones to Ukraine, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-0.2% per year) and India (-9.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average mobile phone import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 22%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while the price for Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+16.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
