Cassava Market Size in the United Arab Emirates

After three years of growth, the cassava market in the United Arab Emirates decreased by -0.9% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, posted a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports from the United Arab Emirates

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of cassava decreased by -24.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cassava exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 110%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Oman (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) were the main destinations of cassava exports from the United Arab Emirates, with a combined 79% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Bahrain (with a CAGR of +23.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Oman ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Tanzania ($X) constituted the largest markets for cassava exported from the United Arab Emirates worldwide, with a combined 74% share of total exports. Bahrain, Qatar, Maldives and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Among the main countries of destination, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +29.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cassava export price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cassava export price decreased by -19.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cassava Imports

Imports into the United Arab Emirates

In 2022, the amount of cassava imported into the United Arab Emirates reduced to X tons, with a decrease of -8.5% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 773% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, cassava imports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 764% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Sri Lanka (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to the United Arab Emirates, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, cassava imports from Sri Lanka exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Sri Lanka amounted to +5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+16.1% per year) and South Africa (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to the United Arab Emirates, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Sri Lanka stood at +8.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+10.3% per year) and South Africa (0.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average cassava import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Sri Lanka ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
