The cheese market in the United Arab Emirates soared to $X in 2021, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Exports from the United Arab Emirates
In 2021, shipments abroad of cheese decreased by -15.6% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 597% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cheese exports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 449%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Oman (X tons) was the main destination for cheese exports from the United Arab Emirates, with a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Oman stood at +3.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+81.6% per year) and Maldives (+20.6% per year).
In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the key foreign market for cheese exports from the United Arab Emirates, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Maldives ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Oman totaled +4.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Maldives (+11.5% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+83.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cheese export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates
In 2021, approx. X tons of cheese were imported into the United Arab Emirates; picking up by 8.3% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cheese imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Saudi Arabia (X tons) constituted the largest cheese supplier to the United Arab Emirates, accounting for a 28% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese imports from Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), twofold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Saudi Arabia totaled -10.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+17.5% per year) and Turkey (+11.8% per year).
In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cheese to the United Arab Emirates, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by New Zealand, with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Saudi Arabia totaled -1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+16.9% per year) and New Zealand (+6.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cheese import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 61%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
