In 2022, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from the United Arab Emirates reduced rapidly to X tons, shrinking by -28.4% on 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 4,741%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 2,775%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Niger (X tons) was the main destination for exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from the United Arab Emirates, with a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to Niger exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Rwanda (X tons), fivefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Niger was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Rwanda (+2,525.4% per year) and India (+6,635.5% per year).
In value terms, Niger ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres exports from the United Arab Emirates, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Niger was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (+10,204.1% per year) and Rwanda (-66.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 89%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+53.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates
In 2022, purchases abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -24.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 64%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre to the United Arab Emirates, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +9.0%.
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to the United Arab Emirates, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 20% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India totaled +18.7%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.4% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres increased by +33.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 28%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Sri Lanka amounted to $X per ton.
