In value terms, dried or smoked fish exports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Sri Lanka (X tons) was the main destination for dried or smoked fish exports from the United Arab Emirates, accounting for a 99% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), with a 0.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Sri Lanka stood at +10.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-16.3% per year) and Oman (-31.8% per year).
In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X) remains the key foreign market for dried or smoked fish exports from the United Arab Emirates, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 6.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Sri Lanka amounted to +15.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-16.3% per year) and Oman (-6.6% per year).

Imports into the United Arab Emirates
For the fifth consecutive year, the United Arab Emirates recorded decline in supplies from abroad of dried or smoked fish, which decreased by -8.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, dried or smoked fish imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Oman (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of dried or smoked fish imports to the United Arab Emirates, with a combined 71% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +13.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest dried or smoked fish suppliers to the United Arab Emirates were Oman ($X), the UK ($X) and Denmark ($X), with a combined 32% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Norway, Myanmar, India and Iceland, which together accounted for a further 16%.

The average dried or smoked fish import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 27% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 125%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
