Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 903% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 861%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Bahrain (X tons) was the main destination for lettuce and chicory exports from the United Arab Emirates, accounting for a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory exports to Bahrain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Norway (X tons), fourfold. Saudi Arabia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bahrain stood at +30.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (0.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+30.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for lettuce and chicory exported from the United Arab Emirates were Bahrain ($X), Norway ($X) and Afghanistan ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports. Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Maldives lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Among the main countries of destination, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +40.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 379% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Maldives ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bahrain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of lettuce and chicory increased by 8.7% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +4.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 67%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Iran (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of lettuce and chicory imports to the United Arab Emirates, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Italy, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Jordan (with a CAGR of +34.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
