The lithium battery market in the United Arab Emirates surged to $X in 2021, jumping by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, lithium battery exports reached $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 208%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Oman (X tons) was the main destination for lithium battery exports from the United Arab Emirates, with a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, lithium battery exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Angola (X tons), ninefold. Zimbabwe (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Oman amounted to +53.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+27.4% per year) and Zimbabwe (+49.3% per year).

In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the key foreign market for lithium cells ans batteries exports from the United Arab Emirates, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Oman stood at +33.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+29.1% per year) and India (+15.4% per year).

In 2021, the average lithium battery export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 113% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, approx. X tons of lithium cells ans batteries were imported into the United Arab Emirates; with an increase of 25% against 2020. In general, imports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 145% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, lithium battery imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), the United States (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of lithium battery imports to the United Arab Emirates, together comprising 60% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for India (with a CAGR of +125.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), China ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the largest lithium battery suppliers to the United Arab Emirates, with a combined 38% share of total imports.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Oman ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
