In 2021, the nitrogen market in the United Arab Emirates was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Exports from the United Arab Emirates
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of nitrogen, when their volume decreased by -1.9% to X cubic meters. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 176% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, nitrogen exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -27.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 93%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Oman (X cubic meters) was the main destination for nitrogen exports from the United Arab Emirates, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, nitrogen exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kenya (X cubic meters), ninefold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Oman totaled +5.5%.
In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the key foreign market for nitrogen exports from the United Arab Emirates, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Oman stood at -2.4%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average nitrogen export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, declining by -24.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 84% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Oman totaled $X per cubic meter.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (-7.2%).
Nitrogen Imports
Imports into the United Arab Emirates
In 2021, overseas purchases of nitrogen increased by 16% to X cubic meters, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports saw a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 813%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, nitrogen imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 270% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Germany (X cubic meters), the United States (X cubic meters) and Singapore (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of nitrogen imports to the United Arab Emirates, with a combined 61% share of total imports. Oman and Kuwait lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.2%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Kuwait (with a CAGR of +208.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nitrogen to the United Arab Emirates, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with an 8.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany amounted to +46.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+3.5% per year) and Oman (-2.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average nitrogen import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 48% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 262%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per cubic meter), while the price for the United States ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (-4.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
