In 2021, the toy market in the United Arab Emirates increased by 39% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption enjoyed a resilient increase. Toy consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2021, approx. X tons of dolls and toys were exported from the United Arab Emirates; waning by -3.5% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 75%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, toy exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Oman (X tons) was the main destination for toy exports from the United Arab Emirates, with a 297% share of total exports. Moreover, toy exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Iraq (X tons), with a 39% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Oman amounted to +23.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+96.2% per year) and Iraq (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Oman ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and Kuwait ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for toy exported from the United Arab Emirates worldwide.

Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +101.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average toy export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Iran (+6.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates

In 2021, supplies from abroad of dolls and toys was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 79%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, toy imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 56%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main supplier of toy to the United Arab Emirates, with a 111% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary (X tons), with a 2.9% share of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +4.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (+190.1% per year) and Vietnam (+41.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dolls and toys to the United Arab Emirates, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 1.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 1.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+39.4% per year) and Hungary (+199.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average toy import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 69% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
