In value terms, watermelon exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 67%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Bahrain (X tons) was the main destination for watermelon exports from the United Arab Emirates, accounting for a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, watermelon exports to Bahrain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kuwait (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Oman (X tons), with a 2.3% share.

The average watermelon export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 63%. In 2022, after four years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of watermelons, when their volume increased by 4% to X tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 379% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 278%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Iran (X tons) was the main watermelon supplier to the United Arab Emirates, with a 91% share of total imports. It was followed by India (X tons), with a 2.7% share of total imports.
