The wood charcoal market in the United Arab Emirates fell markedly to $X in 2021, which is down by -24% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. In 2021, shipments abroad of wood charcoal was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 420% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood charcoal exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 190% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Oman (X tons) was the main destination for wood charcoal exports from the United Arab Emirates, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, wood charcoal exports to Oman exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kuwait (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Oman amounted to +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+65.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+70.9% per year).
In value terms, Oman ($X) remains the key foreign market for wood charcoal exports from the United Arab Emirates, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Oman stood at -2.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+79.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+47.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wood charcoal export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates
In 2021, imports of wood charcoal into the United Arab Emirates shrank markedly to X tons, with a decrease of -19.8% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 119% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood charcoal imports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Indonesia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) were the main suppliers of wood charcoal imports to the United Arab Emirates, together comprising 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Thailand, Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, India and Oman, which together accounted for a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +367.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood charcoal suppliers to the United Arab Emirates were China ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising 80% of total imports. Namibia, Egypt, South Africa, Thailand, Nigeria, India and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +307.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average wood charcoal import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
