Beer Market Size in the UK
The UK beer market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -6.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 8%. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beer production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a pronounced downturn. After two years of decline, overseas shipments of beer increased by 7.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 15%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, beer exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Ireland (X tons), the United States (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of beer exports from the UK, together accounting for 55% of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Canada, Spain, South Korea, Belgium, Italy, China, Australia and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for beer exported from the UK were Ireland ($X), the United States ($X) and Canada ($X), with a combined 50% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, China, South Korea, Belgium, Australia and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 34%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +23.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average beer export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Beer Imports
Imports into the UK
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of beer, when their volume decreased by -19.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, beer imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Ireland (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of beer imports to the UK, with a combined 70% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, the Czech Republic and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +25.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest beer suppliers to the UK were Ireland ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 56% share of total imports. Spain, Germany, Belgium, France, the Czech Republic and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +26.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average beer import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 16%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
