From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, calcium carbonate exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of calcium carbonate exports from the UK, with a combined 37% share of total exports. The United States, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, China, Norway, Switzerland, Spain, South Korea and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 51%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +14.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), France ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest markets for calcium carbonate exported from the UK worldwide, with a combined 35% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, China, Italy, Switzerland, South Korea, Spain, Russia and Norway, which together accounted for a further 48%.
Switzerland, with a CAGR of +11.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average calcium carbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 6.5%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the UK
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of calcium carbonate, when their volume decreased by -32.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, calcium carbonate imports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Norway (X tons) constituted the largest calcium carbonate supplier to the UK, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, calcium carbonate imports from Norway exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Norway stood at +3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-3.0% per year) and China (+35.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest calcium carbonate suppliers to the UK, with a combined 41% share of total imports. Belgium, Norway, Spain, the United States, Sweden, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 53%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Sweden, with a CAGR of +126.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average calcium carbonate import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
