Cashew Nut Market Size in the UK

The UK cashew nut market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. Cashew nut consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -26.5% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 30%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports from the UK

For the fifth consecutive year, the UK recorded decline in shipments abroad of cashew nuts, which decreased by -10.5% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 187%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate temperate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 234% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for cashew nut exports from the UK, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, cashew nut exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled +1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+2.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+25.1% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for cashew nut exports from the UK, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy stood at +6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+29.4% per year) and France (+11.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average cashew nut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.1% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cashew nut export price decreased by -32.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 31%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Barbados ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Finland (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the UK

In 2021, purchases abroad of cashew nuts increased by 119% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 155%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest cashew nut supplier to the UK, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, cashew nut imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +95.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-15.1% per year) and Italy (0.0% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cashew nut to the UK, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 29% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands stood at +88.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-15.6% per year) and Italy (0.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average cashew nut import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -25.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
