In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the UK chicken meat market, when its value increased by 8.5% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. Chicken meat consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Chicken Meat Production in the UK
In value terms, chicken meat production rose rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The average yield of chicken meat in the UK amounted to X kg per head in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 6.7%. The chicken meat yield peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in the UK totaled X heads, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year's figure. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. After five years of growth, overseas shipments of chicken meat decreased by -17.3% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +37.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, chicken meat exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for chicken meat exports from the UK, with a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, chicken meat exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), threefold. Ghana (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands amounted to +11.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+21.9% per year) and Ghana (+14.0% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Ireland ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest markets for chicken meat exported from the UK worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports. Ghana, Benin, Belgium, Gabon, Hong Kong SAR, Serbia, Angola, Romania, Germany and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
Angola, with a CAGR of +90.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average chicken meat export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep reduction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+8.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the UK
Chicken meat imports into the UK shrank modestly to X tons in 2021, declining by -3.1% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 9.3% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to the UK, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Ireland, Germany, Spain, France, Brazil and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +29.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest chicken meat suppliers to the UK were the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 75% share of total imports. Germany, Ireland, France, Spain, Brazil and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Among the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +26.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average chicken meat import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
