After eight years of growth, the UK market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -11.8% to $X in 2022. Exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from the UK reduced notably to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -56.4% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 790% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 467% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Ireland (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) were the main destinations of exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from the UK, with a combined 57% share of total exports. France, Iceland, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +81.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), France ($X) and Ireland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre exported from the UK worldwide, with a combined 45% share of total exports. Denmark, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Iceland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +103.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 109% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iceland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

After eight years of growth, overseas purchases of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -27.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplier to the UK, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Philippines (X tons), fourfold. Sri Lanka (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +10.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (-2.3% per year) and Sri Lanka (-0.9% per year).

Sri Lanka and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

In terms of the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +38.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 26% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
