The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coffee substitutes exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for coffee substitutes exports from the UK, with a 37% share of total exports. Moreover, coffee substitutes exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Iraq (X tons), with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates amounted to +104.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+35.4% per year) and Iraq (+111.8% per year).
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), Saudi Arabia ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for coffee substitutes exported from the UK worldwide, with a combined 51% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +104.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average coffee substitutes export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -19.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 120% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Trinidad and Tobago ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bahrain (+20.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the UK
In 2022, supplies from abroad of coffee substitutes containing coffee increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 163% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, coffee substitutes imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 167%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ireland (X tons) constituted the largest coffee substitutes supplier to the UK, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, coffee substitutes imports from Ireland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Vietnam (X tons), ninefold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ireland stood at +20.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+1,128.0% per year) and Belgium (+71.5% per year).
In value terms, Ireland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coffee substitutes containing coffee to the UK, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ireland amounted to +34.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+85.3% per year) and Italy (+22.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average coffee substitutes import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
