In 2022, the UK ghee market increased by 23% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a resilient expansion. Ghee consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Ghee Production in the UK
In value terms, ghee production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of ghee decreased by -13.9% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ghee exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of ghee exports from the UK, with a combined 85% share of total exports. Spain, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.5%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lithuania (with a CAGR of +41.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for ghee exported from the UK were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), together accounting for 86% of total exports. Spain, Germany, Lithuania, Poland and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.7%.
Among the main countries of destination, Lithuania, with a CAGR of +44.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average ghee export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 42% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee export price increased by +74.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports into the UK
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of ghee, when their volume decreased by -13.1% to X tons. In general, imports recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ghee imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 62%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Ireland (X tons) constituted the largest ghee supplier to the UK, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, ghee imports from Ireland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), threefold. Belgium (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ireland totaled +28.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-13.6% per year) and Belgium (-1.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest ghee suppliers to the UK were Ireland ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 98% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Ireland, with a CAGR of +23.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average ghee import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee import price increased by +48.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
