Wallpaper Market Size in the UK

In 2021, the UK wallpaper market decreased by -8.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a slight curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Wallpaper Production in the UK

In value terms, wallpaper production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 3.6%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of wallpaper and wall coverings, when their volume decreased by -27.5% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper exports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 9.3%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of wallpaper exports from the UK, with a combined 74% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ireland, Germany, Poland, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Sweden and China, which together accounted for a further 12%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for wallpaper and wall coverings exports from the UK, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with an 11% share.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of wallpaper and wall coverings, when their volume decreased by -29.6% to X tons. Overall, total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, wallpaper imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 20%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of wallpaper imports to the UK, together accounting for 70% of total imports. China, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +35.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 7.2% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
