Wheat Market Size in the UK

The UK wheat market contracted to $X in 2022, falling by -6.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Wheat imports into the UK contracted dramatically to X tons in 2022, which is down by -20.7% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheat imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 67%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Canada (X tons), France (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) were the main suppliers of wheat imports to the UK, with a combined 72% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wheat to the UK, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 18% share.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wheat import price increased by +90.1% against 2016 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
