Barley Market Size in Tanzania

In 2022, the Tanzanian barley market decreased by -1.8% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Barley consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Tanzania

In 2022, the amount of barley exported from Tanzania dropped to X tons, shrinking by -6.1% on 2021. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 8,791% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, barley exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 6,871% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Uganda (X tons) was the main destination for barley exports from Tanzania, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of barley, when their volume decreased by -94.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports faced a sharp downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 470% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, barley imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports faced a significant contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 517%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Uganda (X tons) was the main barley supplier to Tanzania, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, barley imports from Uganda exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Uganda amounted to +8.2%.

In value terms, Uganda ($X) constituted the largest supplier of barley to Tanzania, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Uganda amounted to +32.6%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average barley import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -36.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 97%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+55.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
