In 2022, the Tanzanian cocoa bean market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of cocoa beans in Tanzania totaled X kg per ha in 2022, surging by 14% on the previous year. Overall, the yield indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cocoa bean yield increased by +33.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 92% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average cocoa bean yield remained at a lower figure. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 100%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to cocoa bean production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of cocoa beans decreased by -17.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 58%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, cocoa bean exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main destinations of cocoa bean exports from Tanzania, with a combined 87% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +57.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest markets for cocoa bean exported from Tanzania worldwide, with a combined 85% share of total exports.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +78.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cocoa bean export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -17.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 23% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+13.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cocoa Bean Imports

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, overseas purchases of cocoa beans were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 316%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cocoa bean imports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 237% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main supplier of cocoa bean to Tanzania, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, cocoa bean imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United Arab Emirates totaled +9.2%.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cocoa beans to Tanzania, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 1.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates totaled +4.7%.

Import Prices by Country

The average cocoa bean import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -56.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the price for Spain amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+14.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
