Maize Market Size in Tanzania

Maize Production in Tanzania

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 769%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, maize exports plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 715% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from Tanzania, together comprising 92% of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, which accounted for a further 4.7%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +72.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of maize (green), when their volume decreased by -98.7% to X kg. In general, imports faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 1,477% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 630% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The UK (X kg), the United Arab Emirates (X kg) and South Africa (X kg) were the main suppliers of maize imports to Tanzania, together accounting for 95% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +19.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X), the UK ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the largest maize suppliers to Tanzania, together comprising 89% of total imports.
