The Tanzanian whole fresh milk market was estimated at $X in 2022, with an increase of 2.3% against the previous year. In 2022, shipments abroad of whole fresh milk decreased by -46.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 1,412%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 1,329% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X tons) was the main destination for whole fresh milk exports from Tanzania, with a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda (X kg), with a 1.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kenya stood at -25.7%.

In value terms, Kenya ($X) remains the key foreign market for whole fresh milk exports from Tanzania, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Rwanda ($X), with an 8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Kenya amounted to -22.5%.

Export Prices by Country

The average whole fresh milk export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, whole fresh milk export price decreased by -10.9% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Rwanda (+6.4%).

Whole Fresh Milk Imports

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, purchases abroad of whole fresh milk increased by 74% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 187%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whole fresh milk imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 221% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main whole fresh milk supplier to Tanzania, accounting for a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, whole fresh milk imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Uganda (X tons), more than tenfold. Kenya (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Africa amounted to +12.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uganda (-4.1% per year) and Kenya (-25.7% per year).

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of whole fresh milk to Tanzania, comprising 91% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Uganda ($X), with a 3.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from South Africa amounted to +12.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Uganda (-5.3% per year) and Kenya (-29.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average whole fresh milk import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Kenya ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Denmark ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
