Orange Market Size in Tanzania

The Tanzanian orange market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -6.4% against 2019 indices. Orange consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 158% against the previous year. Orange production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of oranges in Tanzania rose markedly to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 6% against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 9.9% against the previous year. The orange yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of oranges production in Tanzania dropped slightly to X ha, approximately equating the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2022, overseas shipments of oranges decreased by -12.1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 408% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, orange exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 434% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kenya (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the main destinations of orange exports from Tanzania.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +182.4%).

In value terms, Uganda ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for oranges exports from Tanzania, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Uganda stood at +24.5%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average orange export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -39.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 101% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kenya amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (-0.3%).

Orange Imports

Imports into Tanzania

In 2022, supplies from abroad of oranges decreased by -2.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 752%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, orange imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 532% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the main supplier of orange to Tanzania, with a 93% share of total imports. Moreover, orange imports from South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kenya (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Africa amounted to +91.2%.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constituted the largest supplier of oranges to Tanzania, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from South Africa stood at +119.4%.

Import Prices by Country

The average orange import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 113% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 125%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+65.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
