In 2022, the Tanzanian crude palm oil market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption posted buoyant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of crude palm oil decreased by -87.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 520% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, crude palm oil exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 499% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for crude palm oil exports from Tanzania, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi (X tons), with a 2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Rwanda stood at +51.9%.

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for crude palm oil exports from Tanzania, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malawi ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Rwanda totaled +69.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average crude palm oil export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Rwanda ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malawi amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kenya (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of crude palm oil, when their volume increased by 4,327% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports saw significant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, crude palm oil imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a significant increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of crude palm oil to Tanzania, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, crude palm oil imports from Malaysia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Malaysia stood at +42.8%.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of crude palm oil to Tanzania, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 29% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Malaysia totaled +34.9%.

Import Prices by Country

The average crude palm oil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+5.5%).
