From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Tanzania

In 2018, purchases abroad of plantains decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, plantain imports soared to $X in 2018. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2018 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2018, Burundi (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plantain to Tanzania, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, plantain imports from Burundi exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2014 to 2018, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Burundi amounted to X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (X% per year) and the UK (X% per year).
