Date Market Size in the U.S.

In 2022, the U.S. date market increased by 1.8% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +14.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Date Production in the U.S.

In value terms, date production shrank to $X in 2022. In general, the total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +71.9% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, the average date yield in the United States reduced to X tons per ha, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average date yield failed to regain momentum. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 22% against the previous year. Exports from the U.S.

After ten years of growth, overseas shipments of dates decreased by -25.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, date exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 30%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Mexico (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main destinations of date exports from the United States, with a combined 76% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +37.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for date exported from the United States were Canada ($X), Mexico ($X) and Australia ($X), together accounting for 72% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Mexico, with a CAGR of +33.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average date export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the U.S.

In 2022, the amount of dates imported into the United States reduced to X tons, which is down by -5.4% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, posted a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, date imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 99%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mexico (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) were the main suppliers of date imports to the United States, with a combined 66% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of +34.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dates to the United States, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Mexico stood at +27.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (+1.8% per year) and Israel (+6.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average date import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
