The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry peas exports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +48.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Ethiopia (X tons), Canada (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of dry peas exports from the United States, together comprising 44% of total exports. Yemen, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Cameroon, Kenya and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by South Sudan (with a CAGR of +54.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X), Canada ($X) and Yemen ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for dry peas exported from the United States worldwide, with a combined 36% share of total exports. These countries were followed by China, Mexico, Peru, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Philippines, South Africa, Cameroon, South Sudan and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 45%.

In 2021, the average dry peas export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of peas (dry) increased by 137% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports posted a prominent increase. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dry peas imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest dry peas supplier to the United States, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, dry peas imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (X tons), with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada amounted to +19.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+730.2% per year) and Ukraine (+117.6% per year).

In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dry peas to the United States, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 5.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada stood at +17.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+594.8% per year) and Ukraine (+95.9% per year).
