The Uruguayan carbonate market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for carbonate exports from Uruguay, with a 94% share of total exports. It was followed by Trinidad and Tobago (X tons), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Vietnam stood at -17.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (+58.3% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+7.1% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for carbonates and peroxocarbonates exports from Uruguay, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Trinidad and Tobago ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports.

In 2021, the average carbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 69% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Trinidad and Tobago ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 30% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbonate imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Turkey (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of carbonate imports to Uruguay, together comprising 49% of total imports. Russia, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, China, the UK, Argentina and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
