The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for non-wheat flour exports from Uruguay, accounting for a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, non-wheat flour exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X kg), more than tenfold. Argentina (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at +97.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-6.3% per year) and Argentina (+7.2% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-wheat flours exports from Uruguay, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Netherlands stood at +86.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-9.1% per year) and Canada (+49.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average non-wheat flour export price amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 45%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (-0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uruguay
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of non-wheat flours, when their volume decreased by -16% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped markedly in the following year.
In value terms, non-wheat flour imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +101.3% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Argentina (X tons) constituted the largest non-wheat flour supplier to Uruguay, accounting for a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, non-wheat flour imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Colombia (X tons), with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+164.9% per year) and Colombia (+48.1% per year).
In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-wheat flours to Uruguay, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Argentina stood at -3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+136.8% per year) and Colombia (+51.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average non-wheat flour import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Colombia ($X per ton) and the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Argentina ($X per ton) and Chile ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
