For the third year in a row, the Uruguayan pimenta pepper market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3.3% to $X in 2022. In 2022, supplies from abroad of pimenta pepper decreased by -7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pimenta pepper imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 24%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pimenta pepper to Uruguay, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, pimenta pepper imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Chile (X tons), sevenfold. Argentina (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.4% share.
