In 2022, approx. X litres of sparkling wine were exported from Uruguay; increasing by 34% against the previous year. In general, exports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 291% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 346% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Brazil (X litres) was the main destination for sparkling wine exports from Uruguay, with a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, sparkling wine exports to Brazil exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X litres), twofold. The United States (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Brazil amounted to +59.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+31.3% per year) and the United States (+19.0% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for sparkling wine exported from Uruguay were Brazil ($X), the United States ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 81% share of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Brazil, with a CAGR of +52.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average sparkling wine export price stood at $X per litre in 2022, increasing by 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sparkling wine increased by 22% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Argentina (X litres) constituted the largest supplier of sparkling wine to Uruguay, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, sparkling wine imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X litres), sixfold. Italy (X litres) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Argentina totaled -14.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-16.7% per year) and Italy (-6.7% per year).

In value terms, Argentina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sparkling wine to Uruguay, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Argentina stood at -14.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-12.6% per year) and Spain (-19.8% per year).

In 2022, the average sparkling wine import price amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while the price for Germany ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
