In 2022, the Uruguayan tea market increased by 3.1% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Paraguay (X tons) was the main destination for tea exports from Uruguay, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, tea exports to Paraguay exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malta (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Africa (X kg), with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Paraguay stood at -16.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malta (0.0% per year) and South Africa (-11.3% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for tea exports from Uruguay, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Paraguay ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Australia, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to -10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Paraguay (-29.0% per year) and Australia (+6.8% per year).

The average tea export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 275% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+70.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Uruguay
Tea imports into Uruguay reached X tons in 2022, picking up by 2.2% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tea imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Argentina (X tons) constituted the largest tea supplier to Uruguay, accounting for a 51% share of total imports. Moreover, tea imports from Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tons), threefold. Ecuador (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Argentina was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-0.8% per year) and Ecuador (-1.1% per year).
In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X), Argentina ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest tea suppliers to Uruguay, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Ecuador, Chile, the United States and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
Among the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +6.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tea import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
