The U.S. flat glass market contracted modestly to $X in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, posted a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
Flat Glass Production in the U.S.
In value terms, flat glass production shrank modestly to $X in 2021. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of flat glass was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2012, thus ending a eight-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, flat glass exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons) was the main destination for flat glass exports from the United States, with a 54% share of total exports. Moreover, flat glass exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (X tons), threefold. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada stood at -17.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (-8.7% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-8.9% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for flat glass exports from the United States, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Mexico, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Canada amounted to +3.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-10.3% per year) and Mexico (+6.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average flat glass export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 166% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+25.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.
In 2021, overseas purchases of flat glass increased by 2.1% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, flat glass imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -21.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of flat glass imports to the United States, together comprising 55% of total imports. China, Japan, Mexico, Israel, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +89.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Mexico ($X) appeared to be the largest flat glass suppliers to the United States, with a combined 52% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, China, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Israel and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 25%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +64.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average flat glass import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, flat glass import price increased by +77.9% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
