For the third consecutive year, the U.S. dissolving grade wood pulp market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 10% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Indonesia (X tons), China (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of dissolving grade wood pulp exports from the United States, together comprising 70% of total exports. In value terms, dissolving grade wood pulp imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a deep contraction. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of dissolving grade wood pulp to the United States, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, dissolving grade wood pulp imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Africa (X tons), with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Brazil stood at +7.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (-15.8% per year) and South Africa (-2.4% per year).
