Among the main countries of destination, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +41.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average recovered paper export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 20%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Mexico ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) and Vietnam ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of recovered paper decreased by -5.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, recovered paper imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) was the main supplier of recovered paper to the United States, with a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico (X tons), with a 2.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Canada totaled -1.4%.
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of recovered paper to the United States, comprising 97% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 2.3% share of total imports.
