In value terms, semi-chemical wood pulp exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 88%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mexico (X tons) was the main destination for semi-chemical wood pulp exports from the United States, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, semi-chemical wood pulp exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cuba (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Canada (X tons), with a 2.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Mexico stood at +11.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cuba (+20.2% per year) and Canada (-0.6% per year).
In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the key foreign market for semi-chemical wood pulp exports from the United States, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cuba ($X), with a 4.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 2.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Mexico stood at +11.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cuba (+16.1% per year) and Canada (-0.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average semi-chemical wood pulp export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Cuba ($X per ton) and Mexico ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+0.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the U.S.
In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of semi-chemical wood pulp, when their volume increased by 113% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, semi-chemical wood pulp imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Canada (X tons) was the main semi-chemical wood pulp supplier to the United States, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total imports.
