Leather Market Size in Uzbekistan
The Uzbek leather market dropped slightly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -1.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Leather consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Leather Production in Uzbekistan
In value terms, leather production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Uzbekistan
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of leather, when their volume increased by 10% to X tons. In general, total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for leather exports from Uzbekistan, accounting for a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, leather exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Portugal (X tons), fivefold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled -5.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+78.9% per year) and Italy (+20.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for leather exports from Uzbekistan, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Portugal ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 4.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to China amounted to +6.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+17.8% per year) and Italy (+17.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average leather export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 138% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+12.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Leather Imports
Imports into Uzbekistan
Leather imports into Uzbekistan surged to X tons in 2021, picking up by 75% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports posted a tangible expansion. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, leather imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 62%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) were the main suppliers of leather imports to Uzbekistan, together accounting for 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Turkey, Russia and Pakistan, which together accounted for a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +14,700.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather to Uzbekistan, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Pakistan ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Pakistan (+10,681.0% per year) and Spain (0.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average leather import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -13.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 66% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
