In value terms, bovine and equine leather exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 23%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for bovine and equine leather exports from Uzbekistan, accounting for a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, bovine and equine leather exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Portugal (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2017 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled -32.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (+18.9% per year) and Italy (-30.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for leather of bovine and equine animals exports from Uzbekistan, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Portugal ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports.
From 2017 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China amounted to -29.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Portugal (-10.8% per year) and Italy (-39.6% per year).

In 2021, the average bovine and equine leather export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +6.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2017 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Uzbekistan
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of leather of bovine and equine animals increased by 110% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 130% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, bovine and equine leather imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant increase. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest bovine and equine leather supplier to Uzbekistan, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, bovine and equine leather imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Lithuania (X kg), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan (X kg), with a 4.2% share.
From 2017 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey amounted to +21.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (-23.9% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-81.9% per year).
In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather of bovine and equine animals to Uzbekistan, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lithuania ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 3.4% share.
From 2017 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey amounted to +13.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lithuania (-37.4% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-67.5% per year).

Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decline.
