Passenger Car Market Size in Uzbekistan

In 2021, the Uzbek passenger car market decreased by -2.4% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of passenger cars decreased by -19.6% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 205%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, passenger car exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 316%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X units) was the main destination for passenger car exports from Uzbekistan, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, passenger car exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Russia (X units), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan stood at -1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (-17.0% per year) and Russia (-43.5% per year).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the key foreign market for passenger cars exports from Uzbekistan, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a 1.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kazakhstan amounted to +11.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (-13.6% per year) and Russia (-44.1% per year).

The average passenger car export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 106% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed significant growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of passenger cars, when their volume decreased by -4.6% to X units. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X units), South Korea (X units) and Kazakhstan (X units) were the main suppliers of passenger car imports to Uzbekistan, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Lithuania, Poland, the United States and the United Arab Emirates, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +126.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
