Potato Market Size in Uzbekistan

After two years of growth, the Uzbek potato market decreased by -9.2% to $X in 2021. Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Uzbekistan, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), twofold.

From 2017 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan totaled +73.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+59.3% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+28.3% per year).

Imports into Uzbekistan

For the fifth year in a row, Uzbekistan recorded growth in overseas purchases of potatoes, which increased by 3.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2017 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.3% over the last four years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +83.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 31%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, potato imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) constituted the largest potato supplier to Uzbekistan, with a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from Kazakhstan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kyrgyzstan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 2.7% share.

From 2017 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Kazakhstan amounted to +16.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kyrgyzstan (+37.7% per year) and the Netherlands (+13.0% per year).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Uzbekistan, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Kyrgyzstan, with a 10% share.

From 2017 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Kazakhstan stood at +15.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+17.1% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+59.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average potato import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
