The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main destination for sugar exports from Uzbekistan, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, sugar exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Afghanistan (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan amounted to -20.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Afghanistan (-92.2% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-59.4% per year).
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the key foreign market for sugar exports from Uzbekistan, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Afghanistan ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Kazakhstan amounted to -22.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Afghanistan (-92.3% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (-55.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sugar export price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 11%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kyrgyzstan (+10.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Sugar Imports
Imports into Uzbekistan
In 2021, purchases abroad of sugar decreased by -8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after seven years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 26,044%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sugar imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32,951% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sugar to Uzbekistan, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, sugar imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil amounted to -5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+44.3% per year) and Sudan (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sugar to Uzbekistan, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Brazil totaled -1.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+40.3% per year) and Sudan (0.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sugar import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 69% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sugar import price increased by +70.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Sudan ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
