Walnut Market Size in Uzbekistan

The Uzbek walnut market totaled $X in 2021, growing by 8.2% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to walnut production reached the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Uzbekistan

For the fourth consecutive year, Uzbekistan recorded decline in overseas shipments of walnuts, which decreased by -38.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports showed a dramatic decrease. The smallest decline of -13.3% was in 2020. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, walnut exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Turkey (X tons) was the main destination for walnut exports from Uzbekistan, with a approx. 99% share of total exports.

From 2017 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Turkey totaled -32.7%.

Imports into Uzbekistan

For the third consecutive year, Uzbekistan recorded growth in supplies from abroad of walnuts, which increased by 40% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 723% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, walnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 520%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Ukraine (X tons), China (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) were the main suppliers of walnut imports to Uzbekistan, with a combined 99% share of total imports.

From 2017 to 2021, the biggest increases were in China (with a CAGR of +107.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest walnut suppliers to Uzbekistan were Ukraine ($X), China ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), together accounting for 98% of total imports.

Overall, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2017 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last four years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, walnut import price increased by +51.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while the price for Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
