Cabbage Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese cabbage market declined slightly to $X in 2022, waning by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The average yield of cabbage and other brassicas in Vietnam stood at X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the average cabbage yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 173% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 148%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) was the main destination for cabbage exports from Vietnam, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, cabbage exports to Taiwan (Chinese) exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X tons), sixfold. Singapore (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Taiwan (Chinese) amounted to +9.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+55.5% per year) and Singapore (+8.5% per year).

In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) remains the key foreign market for cabbage and other brassicas exports from Vietnam, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Taiwan (Chinese) totaled +13.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+59.7% per year) and Singapore (+12.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average cabbage export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Japan ($X per ton) and Cambodia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) and Malaysia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2022, cabbage imports into Vietnam fell to X tons, shrinking by -5.6% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 105%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) was the main supplier of cabbage to Vietnam, accounting for a approx. 99% share of total imports.
