Green Coffee Market Size in Vietnam
The Vietnamese green coffee market soared to $X in 2022, picking up by 17% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a significant increase. Green coffee consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Green Coffee Production in Vietnam
In value terms, green coffee production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 25%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
The average yield of coffee (green) in Vietnam was estimated at X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 12% against 2021. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average green coffee yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of coffee (green) production in Vietnam reduced slightly to X ha, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 2.5% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports from Vietnam
In 2022, overseas shipments of coffee (green) increased by 2.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, green coffee exports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of green coffee exports from Vietnam, together accounting for 38% of total exports. Japan, Spain, Russia, Algeria, the Philippines, the UK, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +6.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for green coffee exported from Vietnam were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 40% share of total exports. Spain, Japan, Russia, the UK, Algeria, the Philippines, Belgium, South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
Russia, with a CAGR of +1.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average green coffee export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 19%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Green Coffee Imports
Imports into Vietnam
In 2022, approx. X tons of coffee (green) were imported into Vietnam; with an increase of 19% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -13.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 116%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, green coffee imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) constituted the largest green coffee supplier to Vietnam, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, green coffee imports from Lao People's Democratic Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Lao People's Democratic Republic amounted to +14.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+1.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+8.7% per year).
In value terms, Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coffee (green) to Vietnam, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 5.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Lao People's Democratic Republic stood at +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+4.7% per year) and Brazil (+9.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average green coffee import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -9.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
