Grape Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese grape market surged to $X in 2022, rising by 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Grape Production in Vietnam

In value terms, grape production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of grapes in Vietnam reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the yield increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average grape yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of grapes production in Vietnam was estimated at X ha, approximately reflecting 2021 figures. Overall, the total harvested area indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grape harvested area decreased by -13.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to grape production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Vietnam

In 2022, grape exports from Vietnam soared to X tons, rising by 16% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 301%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grape exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 251% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Cambodia (X tons) was the main destination for grape exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, grape exports to Cambodia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X tons), with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Cambodia stood at +36.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+74.5% per year) and China (+55.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for grape exported from Vietnam were Cambodia ($X), Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 90% share of total exports.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +69.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average grape export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild curtailment. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Vietnam

Grape imports into Vietnam skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, increasing by 122% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 266% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, grape imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 286%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Australia (X tons), the United States (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the main suppliers of grape imports to Vietnam, together comprising 68% of total imports. China, South Korea, Chile, Peru and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +83.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest grape suppliers to Vietnam were Australia ($X), the United States ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 76% of total imports. China, South Korea, Chile, Peru and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

South Korea, with a CAGR of +85.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grape import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
