Exports from Vietnam
In 2022, shipments abroad of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas decreased by -7.1% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 103%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, mango and mangosteen exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 111% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for mango and mangosteen exports from Vietnam, with a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, mango and mangosteen exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X tons), sevenfold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to +38.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+39.1% per year) and Russia (+94.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for mangoes, mangosteens and guavas exports from Vietnam, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to China totaled +29.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+87.2% per year) and South Korea (+27.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average mango and mangosteen export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -7.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 4.2% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+44.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Mango And Mangosteen Imports
Imports into Vietnam
Mango and mangosteen imports into Vietnam shrank to X tons in 2022, waning by -8.1% compared with 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 166% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mango and mangosteen imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 179%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Thailand (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of mango and mangosteen to Vietnam, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, mango and mangosteen imports from Thailand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Cambodia (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Thailand totaled -6.4%.
In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas to Vietnam, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cambodia ($X), with a 27% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Thailand stood at -4.7%.
Import Prices by Country
The average mango and mangosteen import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+16.8%).
